  • Barbera d'Asti is a red Italian wine made from the Barbera grape variety grown in the Asti province, which is located in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. This wine is known for its deep ruby color, high acidity, and low tannins, making it quite versatile and food-friendly. Barbera d'Asti wines often exhibit flavors and aromas of dark cherries, berries, and plums, with some variations also showing hints of spice and vanilla depending on the winemaking techniques used, such as oak aging.

Barbera d'Asti was granted Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status in 1970 and was later elevated to Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status in 2008, reflecting its quality and the strict regulations governing its production. These regulations cover aspects such as the geographic area of production, grape yields per hectare, winemaking procedures, and aging requirements, ensuring that the wine meets high standards of quality.

There are also subzones and classifications within the Barbera d'Asti DOCG that indicate a higher quality or specific characteristics, such as Barbera d'Asti Superiore, which has stricter requirements including a minimum alcohol content and longer aging period, part of which must be in oak barrels.
