Flor | Film Wines

Flor or Film Wines refer to wines that develop a thin layer of yeast (called **flor**) on the surface during aging. This yeast film protects the wine from oxidation and influences its unique characteristics.

### **Key Features of Flor Wines:**

- **Flor Yeast:** A natural, floating layer of Saccharomyces yeasts that forms on wine in barrels.

- **Limited Oxidation:** The yeast consumes oxygen, preserving freshness and creating distinctive flavors.

- **Nutty, Salty, and Umami Flavors:** Due to biological aging, often with notes of almonds, bread dough, and sea breeze.

### **Famous Flor Wines:**

1. **Sherry (Spain)** – Particularly **Fino** and **Manzanilla**, aged under flor in the Andalusian solera system.

2. **Vin Jaune (Jura, France)** – Aged under a veil of yeast in barrels for at least six years, developing deep, nutty flavors.

3. **Tokaj Szamorodni (Hungary)** – Some dry Szamorodni wines undergo flor aging, creating a style similar to Fino Sherry.

4. **Some Vin de Voile (France & Switzerland)** – Similar to Jura's Vin Jaune but with varied aging times and styles.
