Karas (Armenian: կարաս) is a traditional Armenian clay vessel used for fermenting, aging, and storing wine. Similar to the Georgian Qvevri and ancient amphorae, Karases have been used in Armenia for winemaking for thousands of years. They are typically buried underground to provide natural temperature control during fermentation, contributing to the unique characteristics of Armenian wines.
