  • Frascati is a white wine that comes from the region of Lazio, Italy, specifically from the area surrounding the town of Frascati, located in the hills just southeast of Rome. This wine holds a storied place in Italian winemaking history, having been celebrated for centuries for its refreshing and crisp characteristics. Frascati wines are typically dry or slightly off-dry and are known for their light, fresh qualities, making them ideal for consumption as a young wine.

The primary grapes used in the production of Frascati include Malvasia Bianca di Candia, Malvasia del Lazio (also known as Malvasia Puntinata), Trebbiano Toscano, and Greco. These varieties contribute to the wine's aromatic profile, offering floral and citrus notes, with hints of almonds and herbs in some instances.

Frascati received DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) status in 1966, which was a recognition of its quality and the efforts to preserve the traditional winemaking practices of the region. There are also higher quality tiers, such as Frascati Superiore and Frascati Superiore Riserva, which adhere to stricter production regulations, including lower grape yields and higher alcohol content, to ensure a more refined and concentrated expression of the wine.

Historically, Frascati was known as the wine of Rome, popular among ancient Romans and, later, during the Renaissance period, where it was celebrated for its quality. Its proximity to Rome has always made it a favorite among locals and visitors alike, often enjoyed in the city's many restaurants and outdoor cafés.

Today, Frascati continues to be appreciated for its easy-drinking nature, serving as a perfect accompaniment to a wide range of dishes, particularly seafood, light pastas, and appetizers. Its refreshing acidity and light body make it a favored choice for warm weather and outdoor dining.
