  • The cathedral deans from the neighboring bishopric of Mainz had a summer residence here, in the so-called "little castle" right next to the church. As early as the 18th century, it was noted that during the hot summer months, the cathedral deans had water from the Main river flow into their vineyard at the residence, which was also owned by the Mainz cathedral chapter. The Domdechaney vineyard, named after these deans, faces completely south and is still located today at the foot of the Hochheim church of St. Peter and Paul. The Domdechaney is renowned as a prime location because, despite the high exposure to sunlight, the heavy, calcareous soils ensure a good supply of water and nutrients until autumn, even in hot years, thus guaranteeing high ripeness.

The Hochheimer Domdechaney vineyard, situated at the foot of the St. Peter and Paul church in Hochheim, is renowned for its prime location and historical significance. Named after the cathedral deans (Domdechanten) from the bishopric of Mainz, who used the adjacent "little castle" as a summer residence, this vineyard has a rich legacy. In the 18th century, it was documented that the deans directed water from the Main river to irrigate their vineyard during the hot summer months.

The vineyard faces completely south, benefiting from extensive sunlight exposure. The heavy, calcareous soils in the Domdechaney vineyard play a crucial role in its reputation as a top-tier site. These soils retain moisture and nutrients well, ensuring that the vines are well-nourished even during hot years. This unique combination of soil composition and climatic conditions allows the grapes to achieve high ripeness, contributing to the vineyard's esteemed status in viticulture.
