  • A special feature of the VDP.GROSSEN LAGE ® HERRENBERG vineyard lies in its soils. While Bunter sandstone dominates around the village of Ungstein, the subsoil here consists of loess loam with a high lime content and good water retention capacity. The 32-hectare vineyard, facing south and southeast, is sheltered from cold air currents on a slope at the foot of the Haardt Mountains, at an altitude of 120 to 180 meters, and has a moderately steep gradient of 10 to 25 percent. History: Herrenberg is considered one of the most famous vineyards in the Mittelhaardt region. It was awarded the "Outstanding" designation as early as 1828 during the Royal Bavarian Land Assessment and is thus now classified as a GROSSEN LAGE. In the Middle Ages, the vineyard was a favorite of the Counts ("Lords") of Leiningen, from whom it also takes its name.
