  • Friulano is one of Italy's quintessential white grape varieties, primarily grown in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. It produces versatile wines known for their elegance, fresh acidity, and characteristic almond finish.

    Viticultural Aspects

    • Preferred Climate: Cool to moderate continental climate with notable diurnal temperature variation.
    • Soil Preference:Thrives in ponca soils (marl and sandstone) typical of Friuli.
Performs well in calcareous and well-draining soils.
    • Ripening Period: Mid-season, harvested around late September to early October.
    • Vigor: Moderate vigor; yields need careful management to maintain quality.
    • Pest/Disease Resistance: Moderate resistance to mildew but sensitive to gray rot and excessive humidity.

    Vinification Techniques

    • Styles:Primarily vinified in stainless steel to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity.
Occasionally aged in oak barrels for texture and complexity.
Extended lees contact is often employed for added structure and creaminess.
    • Fermentation Temperature: 14-18°C (57-64°F) to retain delicate aromas.
    • Aging Potential: Typically consumed young (2-4 years), but high-quality examples from structured vintages can age for up to 8 years, developing nuanced almond, honey, and mineral notes.

    Appearance:

    • Straw yellow with greenish highlights.

    Aromas:

    • Primary: Citrus fruits (lime, lemon), green apple, white peach.
    • Secondary: White flowers (acacia, jasmine), fresh herbs (sage, thyme), almond.
    • Tertiary (with age): Honey, brioche, and mineral nuances.

    • Finish: Persistent with the signature almond bitterness.

    Technical Analysis

    • Acidity: Moderate to high, often around 5.5-6.5 g/L.
    • Residual Sugar: Typically dry (<5 g/L), though some producers may create off-dry versions.
    • pH: 3.2-3.5.

    Food Pairing

    • Classic Pairings:Prosciutto di San Daniele
      Frico (crispy cheese dish)
Light seafood dishes (grilled or raw fish)
Fresh cheeses, risottos, and vegetable soups.
    • Other Matches: It complements Asian-inspired dishes, light curries, and sushi.

    Regions & Designations

    • Key Growing Areas:Friuli Colli Orientali DOC
      Collio DOC
      Friuli Grave DOC
    • Other Regions: Small plantings are found in Slovenia (as Sauvignonasse) and parts of California.

    Notable Characteristics

    • Unique Identity: Friulano is distinct for its almond aroma and finish, making it a unique expression of Friuli's terroir.
    • Versatility: Excellent as an aperitif but pairs well with a wide range of dishes due to its balanced acidity and subtle complexity.
    • Once called Tocai Friulano, the name was simplified to Friulano due to EU naming restrictions protecting Hungarian Tokaji.
