Many varieties are indicated with the name Malvasia, mostly white grapes, geographically distributed a bit all over Italy. Although from different backgrounds, all these varieties share some basic features: in fact they all have a spicy fragrance of musk and apricot and rather high residual sugar. These features make the group of Malvasia particularly suitable for the production of sparkling wines and sweet wines. The grape Malvasia di Lazio, like other Malvasia grapes, belongs to the family whose name comes from a variation of Monembasia, a Byzantine stronghold rooted on the rocks of a promontory situated in the south of the Peloponnese, where sweet wines were produced and then exported throughout Europe by the Venetians with the name of Monemvasia. The wine made from this variety had become extremely popular, so much that Venice was full of taverns named Malvase, designed for its consumption. The grape Malvasia del Lazio, also called Malvasia Puntinata, owes its name to the fact that it is widespread in Lazio, where it is mainly grown in the production areas of DOC Marino and Castelli Romani. It is mistakenly confused with the Malvasia di Candia and Malvasia del Chianti. Its remarkable sensitivity to most vine diseases has prompted many manufacturers to replace it with Malvasia of Candia, more resistant but of lower quality. However, it is not rare to find excellent wines made exclusively with Malvasia del Lazio. The berry is white, medium, spheroid with medium pruinose and consistent skin of yellowish color with dots and brown spots. The bunch is medium-large, pyramidal, winged, sometimes tapered, tight or semi-loose with a medium-large, orbicular, three-lobed or five-lobed leaf. The Malvasia di Lazio prefers hilly terrain, well exposed. The grape Malvasia del Lazio has good and constant production. The grape Malvasia del Lazio gives a golden yellow wine. The scent is slightly aromatic with fruity notes of apricot. In the mouth it tastes fresh and discreet.

### Introduction
**Malvasia del Lazio** is a **historic white grape variety of Central Italy**, considered one of the most **qualitative expressions within the Malvasia family**. Indigenous to **Lazio**, particularly the **Castelli Romani** area south of Rome, it forms the aromatic backbone of several DOC and DOCG wines, most notably **Frascati DOC/DOCG**.
Unlike many Malvasia cultivars that prioritize aromatic intensity over structure, Malvasia del Lazio combines **distinct floral aromatics with balanced acidity, moderate alcohol potential, and textural finesse**, making it suitable for both fresh and more complex styles. Ampelographically and genetically, it is **distinct from Malvasia Bianca di Candia**, with which it was historically confused.
---
## Ampelographic & Genetic Identity
* **Family:** Malvasia group (Mediterranean aromatic lineage)
---
## Viticultural Characteristics
| Parameter | Description |
| ------------------- | ------------------- |
| **Budburst** | Early |
| **Flowering** | Early to mid |
| **Véraison** | Mid |
| **Harvest** | Early to mid-season |
| **Yield potential** | Medium to high |
| **Vigor** | Medium |
| **Cluster size** | Medium, conical |
| **Berry size** | Medium |
| **Skin thickness** | Medium |
| **Fertility** | Regular |
### Viticultural Sensitivities
* Moderate sensitivity to **powdery mildew**
* Susceptible to **water stress** in dry sites
* Requires yield control to avoid dilution
* Performs best with **careful canopy management**
---
## Climatic & Terroir Suitability
* **Climate:** Warm Mediterranean with diurnal variation
* **Optimal zones:**
* Volcanic hills of Castelli Romani
* Alban Hills (Colli Albani)
### Preferred Soils
* Volcanic tuff (pozzolana)
* Basalt-derived soils
* Well-drained clay-limestone
These soils enhance **aromatic definition, salinity, and mid-palate weight**.
---
## Chemical & Must Composition (Typical)
| Parameter | Typical Range |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------- |
| **Potential alcohol** | 11.5–13.0% vol |
| **Total acidity** | Medium |
| **pH** | 3.2–3.4 |
| **Sugar accumulation** | Moderate |
| **YAN** | Medium |
| **Phenolics** | Low to moderate |
| **Terpenes** | Moderate (free and bound) |
---
## Winemaking Considerations
### Vinification
* Gentle pressing
* Temperature-controlled fermentation (14–18 °C)
* Stainless steel for freshness; neutral oak or acacia for complexity
* Short skin contact possible to enhance aromatics
* Partial or full malolactic fermentation depending on style
### Ageing
* Typically early-drinking
* Selected lots show **short- to mid-term ageing potential**
* Lees contact improves texture and aromatic persistence
---
## Sensory Profile
### Aromatics
* Orange blossom
* Jasmine
* White peach
* Pear
* Fresh herbs
* Subtle almond
### Palate
* Medium body
* Soft but defined acidity
* Rounded mouthfeel
* Saline-mineral undertone
* Clean, lightly bitter finish (typical Malvasia trait)
---
## Role in Blends & Appellations
### Blending Role
| Function | Contribution |
| --------- | --------------------------- |
| Aromatics | Floral, Mediterranean |
| Texture | Softness and volume |
| Balance | Rounds acidity of Trebbiano |
| Identity | Territorial typicity |
Often blended with **Trebbiano Toscano** or **Trebbiano Giallo**, though premium expressions increasingly favor **high-percentage or mono-varietal bottlings**.
---
## Comparative Position within the Malvasia Family
| Variety | Aromatics | Structure | Quality Potential |
| ------------------------- | --------------- | --------- | ----------------- |
| Malvasia del Lazio | Floral, refined | Medium | High |
| Malvasia Bianca di Candia | Bold, grapey | Low | Medium |
| Malvasia Istriana | Subtle | High | High |
| Malvasia di Lipari | Intense, sweet | Medium | Style-specific |
---
## Regulatory Status
* **Authorized in multiple Lazio DOCs**
* Protected traditional variety under Italian viticultural law
* Recognized separately from Malvasia Bianca di Candia
---
