  • Monastrell, known as Mourvèdre in France and other parts of the world, is a red wine grape variety that is renowned for its deep color, high tannin levels, and strong flavors. It thrives in warm, sunny climates and is particularly associated with the regions of the Levante and the southeastern coast of Spain, where it is called Monastrell, and in France, especially in Provence and the Rhône Valley, where it is part of the GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre) blend.

    **Viticultural Characteristics:**

    - **Climate:** Prefers hot, dry climates and is drought-resistant. It flourishes in areas that receive a significant amount of sunshine.

    - **Soil:** Shows a preference for stony, well-drained soils, which help to moderate vigor and increase the concentration in the grapes.

    - **Vigor:** The vine is vigorous and can produce high yields if not properly managed. Yield control is crucial for quality.

    - **Berry Size:** The grapes are small to medium with thick skins, which contribute to the deep color and high tannin levels of the wine.

    - **Disease Resistance:** It has good resistance to wind and drought but can be susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis in certain conditions.

    **Winemaking Characteristics:**

    - **Color:** Wines made from Monastrell are typically deep in color, ranging from deep violet to almost black.

    - **Tannins:** The thick skins of the Monastrell grapes contribute to wines that are high in tannins, providing structure and aging potential.

    - **Flavors and Aromas:** Monastrell wines are known for their rich, fruity flavors, with notes of blackberries, plums, and cherries, often accompanied by spicy, gamey, and earthy notes. With age, these wines can develop complex leather and tobacco characteristics.

    - **Alcohol:** The grape's tendency to ripen late and its preference for hot climates contribute to higher sugar levels, which can lead to wines with higher alcohol content.

    - **Acidity:** Monastrell wines tend to have moderate acidity, which can vary depending on the climate and soil of the vineyard.

    **Aging Potential:**

    - Monastrell wines, especially those from low-yield vineyards and made with careful winemaking techniques, can have significant aging potential, developing complexity and softening tannins over time.

    **Regional Expressions:**

    - In Spain, particularly in regions such as Jumilla, Yecla, and Alicante, Monastrell is often made into varietal wines that showcase the grape's robust character.

    - In France, Mourvèdre plays a crucial role in the GSM blends of the Rhône Valley and Provence, adding structure and depth to the wines.

    **Modern Trends:**

    - There is an increasing interest in single-varietal Monastrell wines and old-vine Monastrell, which are valued for their intensity and complexity.

    - Sustainable and organic viticulture practices are becoming more prevalent among Monastrell growers, reflecting a broader trend in the wine industry.

Monastrell/Mourvèdre is a grape variety that offers significant versatility and expression, from powerful and tannic reds to part of elegant and complex blends. Its adaptability to warm climates and its ability to produce deeply colored, flavorful wines make it a key variety in its traditional regions and beyond.
