  • During the 1948 harvest in Mukuzani, Rkatsiteli grape pickers discovered two twigs bearing clusters of a distinct pink hue. This variation, now known as Pink Rkatsiteli, has been propagated at the Telavi Zonal Test Station of the Institute of Viticulture and Enology. While it shares most characteristics with traditional Rkatsiteli, it differs in its pink-colored berries, more compact clusters, and notably high sugar content.

Academician Niko Ketskhoveli, in his 1957 work *Cultivated Plant Varieties in Georgia*, classified Pink Rkatsiteli as an independent variety and praised the quality of wine made from its grapes. One of its unique traits is its ability to remain unharvested for extended periods, allowing the grapes to develop exceptionally high sugar levels—often exceeding 35 on the refractometer scale. It also differs from ordinary Rkatsiteli in taste and leaf shape.

Viticulturist V. Loladze took an interest in this variety from the moment of its discovery in 1948. Pink Rkatsiteli originated as a spontaneous bud mutation of Rkatsiteli—a rare event, occurring roughly once in a million. This remarkable genetic shift supports its recognition as a distinct and independent grape variety.
